Rachel McCann is relieved to leave corporate law and strike out on her own when an interesting case comes through her door. Karen Irvine is looking to clear her son Charlie's name after a vigilante group known as The Predator Hunters targets him as a sexual predator. There are just two problems: Charlie was autistic, and Charlie died trying to escape their entrapment. The question is, who's to blame? Was Charlie really a predator? Was it an unfortunate accident or, worse yet, a suicide to escape exposure? Where is the truth in this complicated tale of a bereaved mother trying to clear her son's name? Rachel reluctantly takes on the case, just to find that the online world is a dangerous place not only for children but for adults who aren't ready to face the truths of a brutal world. The Catfish by David Hatton is an exciting legal thriller that will keep you guessing right until the last page.

I enjoyed The Catfish because it focuses on an emerging theme in the twenty-first-century world: online crimes. There are no good laws to govern activity on the Internet, and David Hatton uses this fictional novel to dig into the intricacies and problems with the lack of accountability and the large grey area that lies between the digital world and our own. Rachel's own life struggles parallel her difficulty in pulling the case together to find the truth of whether The Predator Hunters are really a menace to society or a helpful group that's protecting our children. It's a complex tale of intrigue and mystery, with a major plot twist that will have your head spinning. Overall, a great novel. If you like legal thrillers, then this one's for you.
