The Cosmic Principle is a science fiction adventure and the first book in the Nexus series by Abby R. Laughlin. It is best suited to adult readers owing to the presence of moderate sci-fi violence and explicit language throughout. The story follows the exploits of the intrepid Captain Caldera Keane, who finds herself caught amongst the many squabbles of a struggling and divided home world. A sudden change in the line of succession sees Caldera catapulted into the limelight, and now she must deal with the planet’s political and social problems first-hand to survive the heavy crown she’s been handed.

Abby R. Laughlin has crafted a superb story of balanced elements to offer readers a science fiction adventure that also stands out as a mystery novel, political thriller, and space opera-style drama. Within these layers of multi-genre excitement, protagonist Caldera gets to shine as she attempts the rocky transformation from a rough and ready explorer to a shrewd and strategically-minded queen. I felt that Laughlin’s worldbuilding was complete and well-considered, with no stone unturned, so that I understood the planet Bersama and its grim, conflicted history. This book sets us up well for a continuing series, and there’s a wonderfully light overtone in the dialogue with witticisms and flirtations that let the characters sparkle despite the chaos and danger around them. I recommend The Cosmic Principle and I can’t wait to see what more this new series has to offer.
