The Criminal Angel by Heidi Pitre is a bittersweet tale of life, death and love. Emery McQuain had a great life, a great boyfriend and, as far as she was concerned, Thursdays were the best day ever. At least they were until a hit and run took away the two most important people in her life – her mom and her brother. Recovering from her own injuries, all Emery can remember is a shadowy figure, but the accident remains unsolved. Her father won’t look at her, she doesn’t feel the same way about Matt as he does about her, and her life isn’t going anywhere. Then she meets Grayson; she turns to him because he lost his mom too. But things are really not what they seem, and Emery’s life is about to get turned upside down again. Can she come back from this? Is she ever going to heal or will her life be in tatters forever?

The Criminal Angel by Heidi Pitre is a fantastic story, a great first novel from a new author. When it started, I thought it was going to be a typical coming of age girl meets boy story; boy, was I wrong. This is an incredibly well-written story, very descriptive, and very, very real. It deals with growing up, with death and grief, with love and hate. It deals with the pain of losing and the way a life can change forever. The character development was excellent, the characters written in a very realistic way, and I, for one, could empathize and identify with them and I’m sure so many other readers will too. The plot is amazing and the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the worst, hoping for the best, and I wasn’t disappointed. Fabulous story. I hope that Ms. Pitre is encouraged to continue because I would love to see more from her. A new author who can hit the spot with a first novel is a rare thing these days and this one did.
