Ethan Compton has worked hard to overcome his past, and now he is poised to reap the rewards of his labors. As an ambitious and aspiring lawyer engaged to the gorgeous and wealthy daughter of “the boss”, Ethan is ready to step away forever from his early life of temporary fathers, the murder of his mother and the foster homes where he took temporary refuge. He is ready to move beyond his stint in the military that has cursed him with post-traumatic stress disorder. Ethan is ready to grasp the golden ring when suddenly things change dramatically with the murder of a young woman. Ethan is assigned the task of defending the murder suspect, and ultimately must enter the realm of a mind-control expert, which forces Ethan to examine his sanity and risk everything he has worked so hard at having.

Jonathan Mark Bruce has written an intriguing story which captures the reader from the first sentence. Bruce’s style is engaging and confessional. The reader feels as if they are witnessing the events first hand and that Ethan is confiding his innermost thoughts to them. As I worked my way through the labyrinth of this story, I was completely unprepared for the surprising pinnacle, and unanticipated but satisfying ending. "The Deerslayer Spiral" by Mark Bruce is a fantastic book that really grabs the reader and makes him or her think. It is a book that you will want to read again, just to make sure you didn’t miss anything the first time around!
