The Demons of the Wisemen is a work of historical fiction by Barbara Grover. Capturing the American spirit of the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century, the action of this novel follows the trials and tribulations of the Wiseman family. The novel is based on true events, and the central characters, Lena and Tom Wisemen, rise from the depths of poverty to witness some of the most incredible social and economic movements of the era – and also to profit from them. Baseball, gangsters, civil rights and financial meltdowns pepper the plot of this tale of corruption, power and politics, with the Wisemen family firmly at its centre, crafting a tapestry of family saga that covers the whole spectrum of human emotions.

I found The Demons of the Wisemen to be an immensely pleasing read. This slice of Americana delivers well fleshed out characters who feel real, and whose struggles really resonate with the reader as you accompany them on the journey of their lives. I particularly enjoyed Barbara Grover’s unabashed use of vernacular and punctuated dialogue, which gave distinctive voices to the many characters of the novel and juxtaposed beautifully with her vivid descriptive prose. Lena was the cornerstone of the entire novel for me, a hardy woman whose determination saw her through some incredible times. I found the factual additions at the back of the book really brought the novel home and grounded its reality. Overall, I’d say that anyone interested in the dark side of twenties and thirties America is sure to enjoy this book.
