How does a donkey deal with a messy stable? One that needs a major clean-up and a paint job? Well, he asks his friends for help. First he asks his friend, the sheep, for some paint. The donkey is baffled when the sheep faints. But he does get his paint. Then he asks his friend the goat for a brush because you can’t paint without a brush. Even the goat faints. The donkey is more baffled. He proceeds to paint his shed, but he can’t reach the higher areas, so he asks his friend the skunk for a ladder. And, guess what, the skunk faints. Who would have guessed that a skunk would faint from something else’s bad odor? No one dares to tell the donkey that he has bad breath and that it’s the garbage from the bins that’s giving him bad breath. In fact, the donkey has a bad dose of halitosis – what a great word to teach young readers! Not only that, it has a lilt to it that lends well to a humorous rhyming story.

AC Michael’s The Donkey and the Skunk is a delight to read. It does make one chuckle as the rhyming verse leads the donkey from one fainting friend to another. It’s clear to everyone but the donkey that it’s his diet and his bad breath making everyone gag. His friends show great tact in helping the donkey cure his halitosis. Then they all work together to make his stable attractive. Now what to do with the skunk? He still stinks, but it wouldn’t be nice to tell him so. This is a great story about tact, a lesson we all need to learn over and over again. Colorfully illustrated and told in rhyming verse, its humor carries the plot along. Well done!
