This is a techno-thriller in every sense of the word, from its atmospheric scenes where tense conversations and dangerous decisions are made, to the accessible but complex exposition of the various conspiracies and technologies at work. The narrative style gives confidence to the reader, taking us through an accomplished and well thought out plot to a conclusion that fits perfectly, yet is still surprising and satisfying to reach. Overall, The Enigma Beyond continues a truly excellent series and is highly recommended for fans of science facts, thrillers, and technology-based tales.

It is bold, articulating a danger that is fast eating into human consciousness yet one that is ignored by humanity. In this age of AI, humankind is giving up more and more control of their lives to technology in pursuit of an easier and carefree life. A group of global technology predators has developed a very powerful computer — the MAG — and their plan is already underway, using it to manipulate human choices by seizing control of politics, finance, defense, and healthcare systems. The R-Group has to stop them or humankind could be on the verge of a sorry state, but with the ICABOD, can they stop them and do so on time?

The Enigma Beyond by Breakfield and Burkey brilliantly explores the intersection between the virtual world and real-life and shows how our technology can become our worst nightmare if not regulated. The writing is gorgeous, littered with strong descriptions and powerful imagery. I particularly loved how the authors allow the backdrop against which the story takes place to come alive, providing beautiful visuals in the reader’s mind. For instance, in the very first paragraph of the story: “With the sunrise already past its glory, emerging splashes of white clouds were artfully placed amidst a clear blue sky.” I loved the image and there are lots of terrific descriptions and the scenes are written with focus. The Enigma Beyond: Who Won the AI Wars is a page-turner for fans of techno-thrillers, deftly written and balanced. The characters are memorable and the plot is filled with realism.
