The Finest Lies by David J. Naiman follows two siblings who have reached an extreme turning point in their relationship. When a mysterious man appears on her television, fourteen-year-old Nicole is quick to accept his offer to exchange her brother for a new one. She shouldn’t be surprised to find that her older brother has been replaced with a robot that eats her cell phone. As if the snow day couldn’t get any worse, Nicole also has to deal with sentient holes in her house that force her to relive past memories. But as she begins to really look at those memories, she discovers that things weren’t always the way she thought they were, and maybe her brother wasn’t always the bad guy that she made him out to be.

The Finest Lies is filled with shocking twists and unexpected laughs. The combination of science fiction with reality and drama makes this a one-of-a-kind read that young adults are sure to love. I especially loved how the timeline was told out of order, with Nicole reliving events that led up to the present day in which she traded her brother for a new one. I also liked how the main characters are not inherently “good” – especially Nicole, who definitely has some cringe-worthy characteristics that could use some refining. Discovering more about Nicole’s brother was eye-opening and really brings to light the idea of listening to someone else’s side of a story before jumping to conclusions. David J. Naiman has definitely hidden some other moral lessons within this tale, if you can stop chuckling long enough to appreciate them.
