Author Biography

This book is dedicated to everyone with a birthday.

The concept was born at my daughter Kylee's first birthday party. After a long day of running around gathering supplies to throw a great party, my son Joshua tugged on my shirt and asked, "Dad who had the first birthday party" To save myself from having to answer a million questions, I pointed to a greeting card that Steve and I had just completed, and which featured four brightly colored dinosaurs having a birthday party. To make a long story short, over the years Joshua and Kylee asked a million more questions (at least, it felt like a million more), and the story evolved into this book. Since then, the family, in association with Dreammation EFX Studios Inc. Dreammation Digital Media Group, and a handful of non-profit organizations, has performed the story of The First Birthday Party on radio, television, at the Kids Fair, L.A. Children's Hospital, the Special Olympics, the Foster Care Service, the YMCA, the Boys & Girls Club, and at Child Safety Awareness events across America.

The First Birthday Party by K. & K. Johnson is a cute children’s story that evolved over the course of 16 years. Initially an impromptu reply to a son’s question about who had the first birthday, the Johnsons augmented their reply little by little, until it was a complete story. They have performed this story verbally on radio, television, various hospitals, Special Olympics, and many other children’s organizations. Eventually the story evolved into this book.

The First Birthday Party takes place in the far away land of Chuckle-Giggle-Nu when a volcano’s rumbling causes a pterodactyl’s egg to roll out of its nest. It rolls safely down the mountain, across the valley, and finally bounces through the kitchen window into a pan of cake batter, where it hatches. Trudy, the purple triceratops into whose kitchen the egg bounced, laughs when the young pterodactyl asks if she is his mamma, but says she will be his friend. She names him Archie. Exactly one year after he hatched, Archie is having difficulty learning to fly, so Trudy decides to throw him a party to cheer him up. Since it is a year after he hatched, Trudy decides they should name it a “birthday” party. And thus the story begins.

The First Birthday Party is purely intended to entertain and amuse young children. Colorful dinosaurs live in houses, get along well together, and live basically normal human-style lives. The text and illustrations combine to create a story ideal for verbal story-telling to groups of children, as well as a fun book for one-on-one reading to a child. Although anthropomorphic to excess, it is not intended to be taken as factual. As a result of their desire to entertain children, the Johnsons have created an excellent story. It might not take a place alongside classic literature, but it should and will take its place alongside many other entertaining books on a young child’s bookshelf. The First Birthday Party is a cute and fun story that any child will love to hear and, eventually, read.
