Dan Goodin's The Fives Run North-South is a gripping psychological thriller. The story opens with a terrifying road rage incident. Adam Mann, CEO of Fulton Marine Properties, is driving on Route 1 when a red SUV suddenly pulls out from a side road, right in front of his car. Adam slams on his brakes, barely avoiding hitting the SUV. In the days that follow, Adam is the target of random acts of vandalism. A smashed window at home, slashed tires, a break-and-entry at his house. Is there one person behind these acts? Why is Adam the target? Does the road rage incident have any connection to these acts? The situation grows increasingly frightening for Adam and his family. The story twists and turns again and again. The mystery at the core of the novel deepens.

I enjoyed reading The Fives Run North-South for its intriguing characters and page-turning storyline. I liked how the road rage incident has a ripple effect, creating an ever-expanding puzzle. The story's unexpected twists and turns became a challenging mystery for me. I liked the character development and the details of the backstories of the main characters. There is turmoil, anger, anguish, and remorse. I enjoyed the preciseness of the prose, the realistic dialogues, and the drama of interactions, serious and humorous, between various characters. The story became exciting as I tried to figure out how each character fitted into the overall mystery. I liked the ending, an unexpected one, which connects the several twists and turns in the story. Suspenseful from start to finish, Dan Goodin's novel is a well-crafted psychological thriller.
