The Goblin Squad is a children’s fantasy by Jeremy Hayes. The town of Reflection was reasonably safe after knights chased the last dragon away. Now they have a problem with goblins who steal their vegetables. The Goblin Squad has their hands full trying to catch these little green creatures. The squad consists of specially selected kids who patrol the town, looking for these nuisances. Ralf, Rubi, Bobb and the local bully, Slagg, are part of a patrol team. When they capture Gobblesnot, one of the goblins robbing a house, they learn that his leader forces them to loot. The squad lets the goblin escape but trails him to a mountain and discovers the creatures are mining gold. The team quickly realize there is something more sinister brewing in the mountain when a troll attacks them. They begin to wonder if they are brave enough to fight the goblins and save themselves when another unforeseen incident occurs.

Most kids are not fond of vegetables, but goblins cannot get enough of them in The Goblin Squad. The story is an entertaining adventure that highlights the insecurities and untested abilities of Ralf and his friends while they go scouting for goblins. I like the old world charm of the setting, which is more evident in the prologue. The knights’ adventures in the prologue are interesting and can be published into a story. The cover is beautifully illustrated. Jeremy Hayes has written a terrific fantasy that will appeal to children, especially pre-teens.
