As a native Ohioan with a degree from Miami University, Deborah Bence Boerema began her career in the middle school classroom. She then moved into editing and writing educational materials for Goodheart-Willcox Publisher. Deborah is the author of the Guide to Good Food teaching package, consisting of a textbook and seven ancillaries used in food and nutrition classes throughout the United States.

After Deborah left the corporate world to focus on her role as a parent, she began writing books and stories for her son, Nathan. One of these stories has now been refined, professionally illustrated, and released as The Innkeeper's Dog, from Tate Publishing.

The Innkeeper's Dog by Deborah Bence Boerema is the story of Thaniel, the Spaniel. Thaniel the pup feels left out and he is sad that he is not special to anyone. He listens to stories told by his friends in his stable and he feels his life and his presence are insignificant. Though he is grateful for having a roof and food in his life, Thaniel still wishes to be special and important. While the other animals in the stable contribute in some way or the other, Thaniel feels small, thinking that he has not yet started earning. The story is the heart-rending tale of Thaniel who goes through the feelings of sadness, anger, and jealousy while trying to find his special place.

It is a beautiful story for children with a strong Christian message. This sentence from the story confirms God's will for all living creatures: 'Remember that God wants all creatures to use our talents and skills to serve him. And one way we can serve God is by serving others.’ The simplicity of the narration and the beautiful illustrations make the book an exciting read for children. The innkeeper's son, the white and red cow, the sheep and the dove are the other characters in the story that will catch your attention.

It is a perfect book to instill good values in children. It tells them about the gifts they can give back to Jesus. The illustrations give a personality to all the animals in this book and they complement the writing very well.

I finally had a moment during this busy season to sit and read Deb's book and it is so sweet! I love that it acknowledges the feelings of being jealous and left out. The focus of finding our own talents and using them well makes this story a great gift. I bought several to give to families with young children.

Purchased 3 of The Innkeeper's Dog books for my grandchildren for Christmas. I love the story and the illustration. Can't wait to share the special message with the little ones. Fantastic story about the special gifts we all have to offer to Jesus.

One of my favorite Christmas carols has to be The Friendly Beasts. It's a song that seems to have originated in 12th century France and is about all of the beasts that were in the stable the night Christ was born and the gifts that they gave him. The words are beautiful and the tune lovely. My daughter, Emily, even has a Little Golden Book vintage copy of The Friendly Beasts which has the story and the lyrics. So you can imagine my delight, when I offered to read a new book by a fellow Ohio author, I have recently become acquainted with, and found it to be an extension of that ancient song. That author's name is Deb Boerema and her book is titled The Innkeeper's Dog.

Beautifully written and illustrated, this book takes us on the journey of a pup named Thaniel the Spaniel who thinks that he is not special. As Thaniel listens to the stories of the other animals in the stable and what they had to offer the new born king, he feels small and insignificant because he had not been old enough to offer anything of value. In the end, however, Thaniel discovers that he had been special and valuable to the new king in ways he never even imagined.

This is a perfect book for reading at Christmas and seems appropriate for children ages five to ten.
