Kelly Boyd wants nothing more than to be with her family. Even if her work as a nurse was demanding and tiring, and even if there wasn’t much color in her marriage, she’d look forward to the weekend and to precious time with her six grown children and husband, Steve. The presence of Karen, her sister, is also a great addition to the family life she’d dreamed about while growing up. Married for over forty-five years now, Kelly is fulfilled and grateful... until a stranger appears on their doorstep one Friday evening in autumn. Now, she and her family will have to confront a part of her husband that she hasn’t known before. What really happened to him during those years he was away in Vietnam? The Jade Emperor by Suzanne Jenkins is a powerful story that explores the dynamics of family life, secrets, and what it takes to embrace the past when it catches up with us.

Suzanne Jenkins writes with simplicity and a confidence that will immediately appeal to the reader. She opens her story with a powerful exploration of one of the key characters, Kelly, taking readers deep into her psychology. It doesn’t take long for the reader to notice that Steve has been distant from his wife and has manifested an aloof attitude since his return from the war. The reader will love the drama when the truth about his past resurfaces. Lee is a character whose role in the story is indispensable and I enjoyed the way she is developed. The author is a great storyteller who combines the masterful use of dialogues with crisp and vivid descriptions to pull readers into the plot. The Jade Emperor is a wonderful story, highly engaging and absorbing, driven by a huge conflict.
