In The Last Three Miles by Kathleen Rice Adams, Hamilton Hollister survived a tragic accident, but he wishes he hadn't. He's in a wheelchair and hasn't left his home since the incident. Suffering from self pity and fear of anyone else being injured, he's given up on finishing the railway pertinent to his lumber mill's survival. His doctor and friend, Oliver, fights with him to get out of the house and finish the work. When Hamilton tells him to hire someone else to do the job, Oliver takes him at his word. He brings in Katherine Brashear, a progressive potential railroad heiress trying to prove her worth to her father. Katherine comes in like a storm and refuses to let the railroad die.

Kathleen Rice Adams created a unique historical world, and managed to twist tragedy into triumph. Her characters were well developed and interesting. Hamilton painted himself as an invalid for much of the beginning. It made me teeter between sympathy and wanting to slap him out of his chair. When Katherine entered the picture with her strong will, she stirred parts of him to life that he didn't think would ever work properly again because of his confinement to the wheelchair. His transformation into a strong male character, even with his limitations, was incredible. Katherine and Hamilton's flirtations and spicy banter were entertaining and sexy. The chemistry between them could have lit the pages on fire, and their love was inspiring. The author managed to throw an unexpected surprise relevant to the story into the mix, but it was shocking. I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Three Miles for its story line and especially for its romance. I will recommend it, and Kathleen as an author to my friends and family.
