The Lily and the Lion is an award-winning work of historical fiction by authors Catherine A Wilson and Catherine T Wilson. The first book in the Lions and Lilies series, the plot follows a pair of sisters separated before they could even remember one another. The first is Cecile, a rebellious child living a glorious and luxurious life as part of the nobility, and the second is Catherine, who has been raised within a convent as a novice. When one sister discovers the other and tries to contact her, an interception of their correspondence sparks a major political upheaval in the world of medieval royals and nobles. In a time when women’s lives were totally ruled by men, it’s incredible to see what two young women have to endure, and how they manage to come through it.

Catherine A Wilson and Catherine T Wilson weave their writing seamlessly together to create a beautiful and immersive piece of historical fiction. The dingy world of medieval Europe is repainted in vivid living colour, bringing the glamour of Cecile’s life to the mind of the reader versus the simplistic and sometimes squalid existence of her sister. Despite their cultural and economic differences, their struggles as young women of the time make them one and the same, a bonding experience that stretches the distance even when they cannot meet one another. The Lily and the Lion is a triumphant and exciting tale that shows accurate and brutal European history whilst at the same time delivering a superb and heartfelt plot.
