The Little Book of Character Strengths by June Rousso, Ph. D. encourages the reader to explore beyond their natural tendencies to go with the status quo. The development of this book came from the VIA Classification of Character Strengths, where author Rousso presents it in poem format that is understandable for both children and young adults. The section on “Love of Learning” is genuinely masterful and full of wisdom. Expanding one’s views of themselves and others seems to be the author’s intent. Moving beyond oneself to share love and feelings with another to expand the individual's horizons. When one works with others as a team, then the whole unit can be blessed and encouraged rather than just one individual. There is joy in helping others achieve their goals and in helping a group become stronger and more efficient. From the beginning until the end, author Rousso helps the reader to be stretched in their thinking, actions and to break free from their existing habits to develop deeper, more meaningful ones.

While reading The Little Book of Character Strengths, one quickly sees how words, attitude, and feelings play an important part in who we are, what we choose to do and how we respond to others. Without question, this would be a great book to help children during a school focus on “Character” week. This material is certainly understandable and written so a teacher could ask questions and follow up with the material. This would be a very useful tool for both the individual reader as well as to read in a group setting, followed up with a discussion of character and how a person develops both their own character and influences the characters of others around them.
