The Long Way Home is the first book in The Davenport Series written by Judah Knight. The day that the casualty notification officers came to Meg Freeman’s door was one that changed her life forever. They brought news that her husband, Steve, had been killed in action while fighting on a secret mission in Afghanistan. Three years later, Meg decides to finally give herself closure while on an island getaway – a holiday which had been meant for her and Steve. Jon Davenport had just bought himself a yacht. He wanted to be free of the heartbreaking memories of his wife who had died four years earlier. Jon decides to take up his friend Rick's offer to stay at his island resort. Meg and Jon are stunned when they find themselves seated at the same table in a crowded eatery. Jon had been Meg’s older brother’s best friend for many years when they had been in school, but she was far too young for him back then, being four years his junior. In the days that follow their chance meeting, Jon and Meg spend time on Jon’s yacht, rekindling an old friendship and rehashing old memories. As friendship becomes romance, neither realize that they are being hunted, as the yacht carries a very valuable hidden cargo and the original owner will do anything to reclaim his bounty, regardless of who has to die in the process.

I very much enjoyed reading this particular romance novel, largely due to the fact that it came with its own “pop-up” picture dictionary. Links have been set up for the reader to click while reading, so that they can see the yacht, the island, and the story as it unfolds, giving a very clear picture of the story that Judah Knight had pictured in his head while writing. Both of the main characters were given an in-depth back story, showing each one’s great loss and their reasons for finding themselves on the island. The yacht itself is also given a back story of its own so that readers can understand the price that others had already paid at the hands of the boat’s original owner. The emotions in The Long Way Home were hard-hitting, well written, very raw and realistic, so much so that I found myself shedding tears in some parts and laughing out loud in others. Judah Knight has shown incredible writing talent in penning such a complex tale and I look forward to the next book in The Davenport Series. I recommend The Long Way Home to those who enjoy action, adventure, mystery, drama, tragedy and suspense in a romance on the high seas.

Jon Davenport lost his wife two years ago. He decided to pull himself out of the gloom and try to find a new life by going to a resort owned by his childhood friend, Gary. Meg Freeman lost her soldier husband, Steve, in Afghanistan and is left with a mysterious ‘gift’ that he mentioned before his death. These lonely souls build a true friendship when they meet at Paradise Island in the Caribbean, and get themselves involved in an adventure connected to San Roque – a 17th century, shipwrecked Spanish galleon. Authored by Judah Knight, The Long Way Home is an adventure novel laced with romance, which is perfect reading for a relaxing time.

The prologue gives away the core of Jon and Meg’s adventure, telling the story of thirty-four-year-old Captain Rodrigo Francisco de Novoa of San Roque in the 17th century. His lover, Maria, daughter of a tavern owner was killed to silence her from sharing the news of rebellion on his ship. Here Judah Knight briefly shows that he also has the skill to write a period fiction. Fast forward to the present, Knight wasted no time in introducing us to protagonists Jon and Meg and swiftly including their background to allow readers to connect with the characters right away at the start of the story. For me, this part is very well-written as this leaves plenty of room for Knight to pen the other elements of the novel – the romance and the thrilling adventure of finding the treasure. Simply put, The Long Way Home is a well-accomplished novel and I see the promise of a sequel.

The Long Way Home: The Davenport Series, Book 1 is a romantic suspense novel written by Judah Knight. Jon Davenport was a self-made man who would never have to work another day in his life -- if that's what he decided to do. The former history professor was content for now to simply pilot the forty-four-foot pleasure yacht he had picked up in Freeport. His friend, Rick, had a resort in Nassau and had invited him to stay in the past. Now that he had his boat and was in the area, he intended to do just that. Jon was still grieving for his wife, Judith, who had died of cancer a few years back. While he knew he had to move on with his life, it was difficult to see just how he would do that. Rick was not there at the resort; however, his partner insisted Jon stay in the Presidential suite. When he went for breakfast the following morning, he was astonished to see Meg Freeman sitting at the table next to his. He had been a friend of Meg's big brother and had had a crush on her as they were growing up. Jon had even attended Meg and Steve's wedding and was saddened to hear of Steve's death. He was concerned when he heard that someone had broken into her room when she went out for a walk and had stolen everything she owned. Hearing that she had no funds or identification, Jon offered to take her back to Florida in his boat, but he suggested they take a day off first and explore the area. It would be Meg's first successful scuba dive, and she would actually find an antique gold coin while they were diving. Even better, after years of grieving herself, Meg began to feel the first stirrings of passion in a very long time. But would Jon feel the same way?

Judah Knight's romantic suspense novel,The Long Way Home:The Davenport Series, Book 1, is a fabulous adventure tale complete with gorgeous dives in the Bahamas, sunken treasure, and a set of sinister baddies out to destroy civilization. I loved the opening story of Captain Rodrigo Francisco de Novoa's planned voyage back to Europe in the San Roque, a ship loaded with Incan plunder, and I marveled at the adventures Jon and Meg share while diving in the Bahamas. And yes, I was wondering when, or if, these two obviously perfectly compatible people would be able to leave their pasts behind and sail off into the sunset happily ever after. Knight's plot is taut and suspenseful, and his characters are compelling and real. Best of all, there are spectacular diving scenes throughout this suspenseful tale. The Long Way Home:The Davenport Series, Book 1 is most highly recommended.

The Long Way Home is Book One in The Davenport Series by Judah Knight, a compelling entry in the romance and suspense genres, a book that combines love and adventure to offer beautiful lessons on life and to entertain readers hugely. Stranded in the Bahamas, Meg could have thought her situation to be a hopeless one, but then the unexpected happens: a long lost friend comes along with a boat. She just needed a ride, but it turned out to be an adventure of a lifetime, one that would change their lives forever and set them on a love ride they’d only have dreamt about as they sail against the rough tides, with terrorists in their wake. Then there's the treasure trove and manifold joys, and the challenges of the sea. Watch them as they sail against the odds and into each other.

The Long Way Home is one of those books that brilliantly delivers the message that people get more connected with each other when they face challenges and adversity together. I couldn’t help but think about the movie Six Days, Seven Nights and wondered what this beautiful story would look like on screen. Judah Knight writes in clear and beautiful prose which reads at times like poetry. The dialogue is well thought out and it is enjoyable, revealing a lot about the characters and moving the plot forward. A lot happens in this story to keep readers excited. There is suspense, and there is the kind of conflict that creates interest and spurs the reader to keep reading on. The characters are well explored and readers will find it easy to sympathize with them.

The Long Way Home by Judah Knight tells the tale of Meg Freeman and Jon Davenport. Meg is stranded in the Caribbean, and Jon is her answer home. The two begin a journey home that leads them along adventure, romance, intrigue, and more. Together, the two join forces to search for treasure connected to a Spanish galleon from the 1600s, all the while encountering danger, action, and suspense, as well as learning more than they had ever known about each other. Their connection and friendship becomes a budding romance, turning a simple ride home into a romantic adventure that neither had expected. Curl up with Meg and Jon and experience treasure hunting, pirates, power, love, and ultimately adventure across every page.

Judah Knight has crafted an exquisite story with just the right blend of varied genres in The Long Way Home. This book is definitely on my re-read list. It is an exciting mix of romance, action, adventure, and intrigue with just the right amounts of drama, mystery, and suspense. The plot and its development were obviously well researched, and Knight had me drawn into the story by the end of the second chapter, feeling like I had been transported right into the pages. Great for a rainy, dreary day, or just a weekend read to get away from the world, this book is an excellent escape from reality. This book has a little bit of everything to draw you in and keep you turning its pages. It has just enough romance to keep the average reader (OK, maybe woman) interested, but not too much that you could not pass the book on to your teen after reading it. Men and women alike can enjoy the action, adventure, and mystery all around. I would recommend this one to just about anybody.
