The Lost Book of Eleanor Dare by Kimberly Brock is a beautiful and captivating novel. The mystery of Roanoke ties into the familial history of Alice, who is a descendant of Eleanor Dare. Eleanor's legacy is handed down through a book that contains her story, given to each generation of women as they came of age. When Alice was thirteen, her mother's death kept her from receiving Eleanor's book along with the familial Dare stone. Now Alice is a single mother to thirteen-year-old Penn and is returning to her childhood home of Evertell, determined to put the past behind her once and for all. But secrets unravel that will lead them both back to the story of Eleanor Dare and they'll soon understand the true meaning of the legacy she left behind.

A tragically lovely prologue sets up the dynamic between mother and daughter with a young Alice and her mother at the moment when the legacy of Eleanor fails to be handed down. Through stunning writing, Kimberly Brock delivers rich and poetic prose that transports you into a lush historical reality that truly captures the power and mystery of the unknown. The writing style is used to deliver the power found within a woman's legacy left for her daughters. The details breathe life into Evertell through enchanting elements such as towering pecan trees and salty air, seasoned with a tone that creates nostalgia for the life Alice once had. The setting is rooted in a rich historical background to the mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke which is flawlessly woven into the legacy of Eleanor. A beautifully written and organic depiction of mothers and daughters, The Lost Book of Eleanor Dare is a journey in self-discovery, matriarchal legacies, and family mysteries set against a captivating historic backdrop.
