Bob Crane flies to Columbia National Refuge in Washington State every year, along with six thousand other cranes. Families who live in Othello have a Sandhill Crane Festival to celebrate their arrival. Many spectators visit the area to view the amazing sight. This year was different for Bob, as his mate, Babette, had to stay behind in Nebraska to care for their small fledgling. He told her to look for the wishing star every night as it has magical powers. Barry, a fairy god bird, appeared to Bob and granted him three wishes. Bob had a strong desire to help other birds, and his wishes came true. In the beautiful book, The Magical Journey of Bob Crane, author Karen Nicksich describes this lovely crane event, giving insight into the animal world.

This book is rich in opportunities for parents to teach their children many important life lessons. There is an appreciation for the beauty of cranes, other birds, and many animals; the wonders of the natural world; the power of magic and imagination; the importance of community among various species; expression of gratitude; the list goes on. The illustrations by Pam Sharp are delightful, capturing a child’s (and the adults’) imagination. While parents can read the book to young children, the story will continue to enchant older children when they are able to read it themselves. Author Karen Nicksich has crafted a captivating, adventurous children’s book in The Magical Journey of Bob Crane. It is a book that will be read over and over again.

The Magical Journey of Bob Crane by Karen Marie Nicksich follows the fascinating journey of Bob, a Sandhill crane migrating along the Great Pacific Flyway. Just before arrival, Bob is fascinated by a group of wild horses he sees from above. Families living in Othello gather to witness the fascinating sight of the birds’ arrival. Doves, robins, crows, and ducks are among the two hundred species present. Each species calls and sings their special song. As Bob settles down, he feels sad. The migration has led to his separation from his mate and fledgling but he is hopeful that it will not be long before they meet again. This time, however, Bob’s journey is more adventurous as his fairy god bird presents him with three wishes. Bob now has the chance to help more birds than he could before.

The pages of The Magical Journey of Bob Crane are filled with captivating watercolor images created by Pam Sharp. They not only add color to the pages but they bring the characters to life. Though fascinated by what he sees, Bob is sad from missing his family. He also longs to help more birds. His emotions and dreams helped me view Bob as an authentic character. His compassion for others, which is seen through his use of the wishes granted to him, is also inspiring. The plot includes brief stories of other birds Bob encounters which makes the overall story even more delightful. Surprises occur during Bob’s journey. They make the story unpredictable and hence engaging. The Magical Journey of Bob Crane by Karen Marie Nicksich is an amazing children’s book which both young and adult readers will find fascinating.

The Magical Journey of Bob Crane by Karen Marie Nicksich is the story of a Sandhill crane called Bob, who is migrating with his flock. They do this every year and Bob loves the sights he sees on the way. He is a member of the Best Bird Academy and though he is separated from his mate and child, he is hopeful of seeing them again soon. They will stop in the town of Othello where there is an annual crane festival to celebrate them. He is helpful and cares about his fellow birds. When he is given the opportunity to have three wishes granted, he chooses to make their lives better rather than to be selfish.

Karen Marie Nicksich has written a charming book which I think will appeal to children and adults alike. I loved the pictures included showing the vast array of birds depicted. They were beautifully drawn and really catch the eye. Bob's story is entertaining and heartwarming and would be a fun book for a parent to read to or with their children. The illustrations really bring it to life and Bob has a wonderfully positive and hopeful attitude. I think the book would do well on the market, especially for children who wish to learn more about animals and birds in a fun way. By telling Bob's story, it helps them engage with the story and learn while they are doing it. I would definitely recommend this book to children from around age six and up.
