A rushed marriage creates havoc in the lives of an eighteenth-century town in the stunning novel, The Mesalliance (Rockliffe Book Two) by Stella Riley. Tracey Rockliffe may claim he only wants to marry a proper Duchess, but until he meets Adeline Kendrick, he is simply fooling himself. Inexplicably drawn to Adeline, Rock finds himself in an uncomfortable situation. On a whim, he proposes marriage to the girl he fell in love with eight years ago. Only, the girl he met briefly so long ago has been hurt and hides her inner beauty behind sarcasm and sharp wit. When faced with possible tragedy and disaster, Rock and Adeline must choose to stay loyal to each other or risk losing everything. Can Rock's tender understanding and compassion uncover Adeline's love? Or will Adeline's constant rebuffs prove to be too much for the indomitable Tracey Rockliffe?

Pride and Prejudice meets Jane Eyre in the fabulous historical romance, The Mesalliance (Audio book) by Stella Riley. Rock has many problems to contend with, but the crux is his relationship with the lovely Adeline Kendrick. In a story fraught with misunderstandings and secrets, one is not certain whether the couple will have a happy ending. Aside from troubles with Adeline, Rock must find a suitable companion for his younger sister, Nell. Vetting possible suitors, while becoming acquainted with his new bride, may be too much for Rock. I appreciated how the characters were so well rounded, and commend the author for keeping to the tone and pace of the chosen time period. I loved this book! It was easy to get lost in. The writing style and phraseology were delightfully reminiscent of an Austen or Bronte novel. The audio book, performed by Alex Wyndham, was moderately to well acted. Mr. Wyndham brought the characters to life, and even manged to keep the retorts and quick replies flying. I recommend this book to fans of historical novels containing sharp wit, sinister plots, and hard-won love.
