In The Mountain of Long Eyes: An Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Thomas Hamilton takes us to amazing places from the other side of the galaxy to our own backyard. There are stories of shamans battling terrorists in a decidedly Native American influenced story; and my particular favorite, two stories about a girl who escapes her planet to run from dictatorship and oppression as a teenager, and then later we get a glimpse into her adult life. I also really enjoyed "Why Must I Move," because of an unusual blend of ghost story into a kind of a science fiction novel. There was a lot of cool thoughts, ideas, and commentary on everyday life hidden within these pages, and I really enjoyed my journey discovering all that Hamilton has to offer.

One of the best things about anthologies, and this book in general, is that you get many different kinds of stories wrapped up into one. Even if you have a similar theme, in this case Science Fiction, you are bound to get many kinds of writing styles, tones, and characters. Reading anthologies is one of my very favorite ways of finding new authors that I like, or experiencing one author's many different styles and ways of writing. The Mountain of Long Eyes introduced me to Thomas Hamilton with a bang. There is a whole lot to consider when looking at this work. You've got funny stories, politically relevant stories, horrific stories, all mixed together with elements of classic science fiction such as time and space travel.
