The Mysterious Fall is a work of fiction in the time travel, mystery, and adventure subgenres. It is best suited to the adult reading audience and contains some moderate references to violence and death. Penned by author Angus Silvie, in this enthralling drama with a science fiction twist, we find ourselves in the self-defeating world of protagonist Marlo Campbell, who feels unfilled and unlucky in love because of his physical appearance. Marlo buries himself in the world of writing and research to combat this when he finds the diary of Lillian Jones, a young girl in the Victorian era who died under mysterious circumstances. Little does he know but his idle curiosity will spark a life-changing, time-altering series of events.

Author Angus Silvie has crafted a masterpiece of time travel and crime-mystery fiction that will satisfy readers of all sorts of different genres because of its multi-layered approach. One of the most striking features of the work for me was the construction of our very unique protagonist Marlo, who is so often in his own way that he becomes a kind of anti-hero to the piece. This suits the meta-level discussions of the novel well, which center around writing and the nature of how we view ourselves and our place in the known universe. On the ground level of the novel, a very clever and enjoyable mystery plot springs to life, and the vivid descriptions of Victorian England make every new chapter highly engaging and a little educational to boot. Overall, The Mysterious Fall is a deeply engrossing novel that will satisfy fans of many different genres, and I’d encourage all readers to give it a go.
