The Mystery on Lost Lagoon: Nikki Landry Swamp Legends by Rita Monette is a fantastic adventure about a young girl and her group of friends (some who are better friends than others). Nikki and her buddies live in Cajun country amid swamps and lakes ripe with mysteries to discover. With the help of friends Patti, Spikes, and Tim, Nikki forms the Legend Busters Club. Their purpose is to discover the truth behind the legends of the area. While this goal promises plenty of adventure for the group, it also brings plenty of danger too. And, on this particular journey, there might not be any way out.
I enjoyed The Mystery on Lost Lagoon. Author Rita Monette builds a wonderfully vivid world with plenty of surprises and enticing secrets. I particularly enjoyed the Legend Busters Club. Nikki and her friends are well-written individuals who have their strengths and weaknesses. I particularly liked Nikki. As the lead character, it was great to see her work through her fears and learn to face them anyway. She didn’t always have the answers and wasn’t always the brave one. In fact, she was real and relatable which made her all the more endearing. This book reminded me of some of the older books like Nancy Drew and other adventure mysteries where trouble abounds and curiosity leads the way. On top of this, Monette throws in a twist with a little bit of magic and fantasy. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to dive into an adventure filled with great characters and vivid writing.
