The October List by bestselling author Jeffery Deaver is written in a most unique manner. Deaver has written this novel backward. It starts at the ending and ends at the beginning. Gabriela McKenzie’s daughter is being held for ransom. The six-year-old child was kidnapped by Joseph Astor who is demanding $500,000 and the October List, a list of high profile clients of Prescott Investments. Gabriela has only two days to pay the ransom. Her only help is sexy Daniel Reardon, a man she met in a bar.

Jeffery Deaver is well known for two series: Lincoln Rhyme and Katherine Dance. In The October List, his latest stand-alone, Deaver uses both a unique format and a tried and true formula. As previously stated, the book moves backward in time with the ending at the beginning and the beginning at the end. The formula he uses is one perfected by Alfred Hitchcock: innocent bystanders are drawn into the mystery, the protagonist and several others want something, in this instance a list. While the list appears to be an important part of the plot, in reality it is very unimportant to readers. The October List is not an easy book to read. It is only after a few chapters that the characters start to take on distinct personalities. There are pictures at the beginning of each chapter. The author took the pictures and each one is a clue. The captions hint at what each chapter is about. Once again, Jeffery Deaver proves he is a brilliant author.
