The conflict, both internal and physical, the powerful, intense stream of consciousness, the tightly knit plot with its surprises are just a few of the many elements that readers will adore in The Pain Season, Book Two of the Covalent Series by Libby Doyle. I was hooked from the very beginning of the story with the protagonist, Alexandra O’Gara, an investigator and protector, anxiously looking forward to learning the secrets of her lover. What will happen when she discovers that the man she is irresistibly attracted to, the man who awakens all the passions in her is, in reality, an offspring of Lucifer himself, a cold-blooded and powerful murderer? What happens to love in the dangerous quest for the truth? That is for the reader to find out.

The plot is cunningly and cleverly constructed, allowing a love between a deadly creature, Barakiel, and a woman who is dedicated to protecting people from his kind. Readers will be rattled as they follow the upsurge of emotions in the protagonist and even when things look dire and dangerous, can she count on him? Or, is she forever trapped, lost in a world where the need for him becomes more and more as she discovers the dangers in getting too close?

It is within this context that the plot evolves and there is just so much to keep the reader’s heart racing, wanting to know what decision the protagonist will make next. Libby Doyle is an expert craftswoman when it comes to weaving gripping and hard-to-put-down stories. From the colorful setting, to the deft character development, to the exciting plot, The Pain Season is a page-turner, a wonderful story about the perils of love and how far the human heart can endure hurt to stay connected, even when it risks being shattered.

The Passion Season: Book I of the Covalent Series by Libby Doyle is a truly amazing urban fantasy guaranteed to set the heart aflutter and the pulse racing. At the start it follows Rainer Barakiel, son of Lucifer, as he is exiled from his home. He is a Covalent, a race that, above all things, must find a balance between the energies of creation and destruction. His father, Lucifer, was a traitor, and gained control over the realm of destruction and all those who dwelt within. Relentlessly, he sends his forces against the Covalent, hoping to seize control, whilst also sending his minions to the earthly realm where the son he wished to win over was exiled. Loneliness threatens to engulf Rainer, but he finds unexpected friendship from Pellus, an adept assigned to him who shields his activities from mortal eyes.

Empires rise and fall, his time passes in a combination of business and battle, and longing for home. But then he finds it in the most unexpected place, in the arms of a human known as Zan, and finds in her a kindred spirit. Zan, (Alexandra O'Gara), is no stranger to turmoil. She has a warrior’s soul and has survived more than most should ever witness in life; a former army veteran, a recovering alcoholic, who now works as an agent for the FBI. She has no interest in men but is helplessly drawn towards him, and both have secrets they would rather remained buried. With the war between realms and the uncovering of sacrificial cults, Zan grows closer to discovering a truth that could put her very life in jeopardy, one that Rainer must shield her from, or risk what they have become.

If I could give any more than five stars, I would. Libby Doyle has a vivid descriptive voice, allowing the crafting of beautifully scripted romance, epic conflicts, and heart pounding action. Clear thought has gone into every aspect of the plot, from the inner workings of magic, to the dividing of realms in a fantastic manner. The Passion Season: Book I of the Covalent Series truly is a book you won’t want to put down. Written in alternating character points of view, we are given glimpses into the psyche of some very real, well-constructed characters. It has everything; good vs evil, conflict, friendship, betrayal, and some smoking hot sex scenes, which at no point were anything other than beautifully written. Engaging, page turning, thrilling, I just couldn’t put it down. One thing is for certain, Libby has been added to my top author list so I remember to keep an eye out for the next book in this epic, fantastic series.
