The River Exotic by Grant Oxley is a children’s adventure. It is the story of Thiago, a poor, orphaned boy who struggles to make a living from fishing. While fishing in new waters, he finds an ancient Inca ruin with an inscription about lost gold. Thiago yearns to become rich and embarks on a quest to search for the treasure. He faces many complex challenges along the way, both on land and river. When hostile treasure hunters chase him, Thiago flees inland and finds a tree bearing unusual fruit that provides him with special nourishment. He begins to contemplate the purpose of his life while having visions that began when he found the Inca ruin. Thiago knows he was destined to make this risky venture, but wonders if it is truly worthwhile when he is captured.

Grant Oxley’s novella, The River Exotic, was inspired by books such as The Old Man of the Sea, The Alchemist, and Homer’s The Odyssey. It’s a touching story of a young boy living deep in the Amazon. He has no one to teach him the fundamentals of life or proper skills to become a fisher boy. Yet Thiago somehow manages to survive on his wits and humour. The novella is written in a basic, laid-back, meaningful format within a setting that shows simple village culture. Grant Oxley teaches children how to overcome obstacles, develop self-awareness, and appreciate the simple things that others take for granted. The River Exotic is an enjoyable book that is recommended.
