The Royal Heart by Greg McGoon is an enchanting storybook for children that deals with the messages of love, acceptance, discovery, and celebration. Lyric was born to the King and the Queen after a long time. The King expects Lyric to rule the Kingdom one day, and tells him that ruling a Kingdom requires balance of heart, wisdom, and strength. Lyric is not too sure about his abilities and voices his concern to the King. Lyric does not see himself as a King and he is worried that he will disappoint his father. Lyric knows he is living a lie and he sneaks out of the Palace, into the wood, when it is time for his 16th birthday celebrations. What is it that is bothering Lyric? Why is he scared about the acceptance of society?

The story is beautifully expressed and the author handles a topic that is original and uncommon with expertise. The concepts of unconditional love, acceptance, and embracing oneself are good for readers. The illustrations are colorful and bright and they breathe life into the story and characters, and make the concept and messages clear to readers. This fairytale, though different from the usual ones, will definitely captivate readers and help them understand transgender children better. It is a book for bedtime story-telling and can be used in classrooms and school libraries for read aloud sessions. The concept and message of the story are excellent and the portrayal of Lyric’s character and feelings has been well expressed.
