The Ruins of Arlandia is set in the apocalyptic aftermath of a one-hundred-year long galactic space war between the Goremog Empire and the No'Rath Domain. In this first volume of its series by William F.F. Wood, the universe has been greatly devastated by the war. Yet the fight does not end there - fleets of robot controlled space ships have been built in order to continue fighting and killing each other. The empires of Arlandia and Aleria had built a secret super weapon that can destroy the enemies, in ten undisclosed locations. However, the weapon is not completed. Lieutenant Calvin Range and Astra, Princess of Aleria, must find the pieces of the super weapon and assemble it before it is too late.

I appreciate the clean nature of the novel – there is no graphic language nor violent scenes. Wood does a great job in creating flawless and descriptive surroundings for readers, and this is the main strength of the story. The depiction of the locations and even spaceships is delightful, with each of them brought to life in vivid detail. That being said, the writing style tends to gear toward young adult readers. The pacing of the story is fairly quick and only one sitting was needed for me to read it. On the whole, The Ruins of Arlandia has the elements of a classic science fiction novel with a great adventure that will attract both young and mature readers. The ending provides a great cliffhanger to make sci-fi fans look forward to the next volume.
