Peter Nennhaus successfully transports the reader to Berlin before and during WWII. It was a time of political turmoil, expectation, and horror. The reader watches as Stalin’s tyranny oppresses the people. They witness Germany’s resistance against the Soviet Union. Nennhaus allows readers to experience the emotions, attitudes, and opinions of the German.

The Shipwreck of a Nation is a look at the era through the eyes of the author, Peter Nennhaus. The author was born in 1929 to a middle class family. Nennhaus does not attempt to explain the whys. His goal is to share what the average German citizen experienced through the eyes of a young boy. The views in this book are the views of Peter Nennhaus, not everyone will agree with them.

This is not an entertaining or pleasant read. It is rather difficult to accept the stupidity of humans. However, this is an informative read and a thoughtful one.
This book explains why so many Germans were offered support to Hitler. This book gives humanness to Germans even the ones that supported Hitler. In some statements Nennhaus appears to be rather naïve. The Shipwreck of a Nation is well written. It gives a different perspective of German. Another reviewer pointed out that this is a cautionary tale. I agree. We all think this will never happen in our country. Perhaps we should look at recent history.
