The Silent Are Rising by Jordan Noeding is a supernatural fantasy crossover novel and the ambitious first book of The Second Ghost War series. It has been centuries since the first Ghost War and a second coming is unthinkable with the army of Mortuusva—Mortuusva being the land of the Dead—long defeated and relegated to the Graylands. Or so it is thought. When a girl from the Waste named Eudora is the sole survivor of a village massacre at the hands of the Mortuusva Army, she discovers through a captain that her bewildering release from the Saatune, Avacslub, is not just a random act of kindness. Only a Saatune can create a Ghost, and only one exists: Malishca, a warrior of the hundrazon, and trained guardian of the realm. Malishca is on the hunt for the murdered Governor's heir Rylent, who is accused alongside his kidnapped sister of leading a revolution.

I love fantasy fiction but am always wary of starting a new series, mostly because it's a massive time commitment, the wait between novels is unbearably long, and unless they come with the name of an established author attached, they're unlikely to be great. The Silent Are Rising was set in my lap twice before I finally agreed to give the nearly 800-page tome a chance and, my gosh, I am so pleased that I did. Aside from being a wildly talented author in their own right, Jordan Noeding knows how to craft a story and pace it to perfection. There are three main characters but there are several point of view angles beyond them, which means the entire world being built is fleshed out and developed methodically and, best of all, with exactly ZERO information dumps. There are twists, a few early on and more as the story progresses, and some genuine tear-jerker moments. Eudora has my whole broken heart; Malishca is less than likable but wildly captivating, and Rylent is a guy who feels like a third wheel but is relevant and intriguing nonetheless. All I have to say is that I'm going to bed now and when I wake up the second book better be ready for me. Otherwise, I may have to cut the cord [if you know, you know]. Very highly recommended.
