Luke and Jude. The perfect couple, with two beautiful kids, Emma and Jacob, and a 22-year-long marriage. He has a successful business and she has a job she enjoys. So, what more could Jude Johnson require? Well, an orgasm would be nice! Jude played the dutiful, loving wife in public, but behind closed doors no one could have guessed just how lacking her life really was. And then she finds out that her loving husband is actually a serial cheater. The Six-Month Rule by Carrie-Ann Schless is the story of Jude, a modern-day woman set free from a loveless marriage and the constraints of her life and ready to take a journey. She embarks on a four-month trip, alone. In places as diverse as Dubai to Dublin, she embraces her new-found freedom but denies that she is looking for a man. Hence the six-month rule! If she does meet someone else, she has sworn to her friends that it will take six months before she is intimate with them. Can she keep that rule? Will her fear of “new willies” keep her single for the whole of her trip and beyond?

What a great example of exactly what chick-lit is all about. An ordinary woman deciding to do extraordinary things. The Six-Month Rule is a Shirley Valentine tale for the 21st century. Carrie-Ann Schless has filled this book with great characters, especially Jude. She faces her demons and the problems that arise head on, leaving the reader with a real sense of empathy for the decisions she has to make. Her family and the difficulties they encounter are typical of a modern-day family unit and Jude has to decide where her future lies. I loved this book and found myself rooting for Jude and cheering her on in her quest for love. The perfect feel-good book for any modern woman, and indeed any modern man who wants to learn a thing or two!
