The Small Matter of the Death Cult of Katahdin, The Shabby Realm, Book 1 is a contemporary fantasy written by Lennox Brown. Winston Lamb is a private investigator who's not above doing a little bit of breaking and entering. These are tight times for the struggling vampire sleuth, and the payoff for this job could make a huge difference in his professional and private life. The first challenge was to break into Stonebridge Manor, which entailed getting past the famed cast-iron Wolcott lock which required a key that was not included in Winston's lock picking set. That challenge completed, he wandered into the parlor where the Lady Nigella, a level 28 witch, was welcoming her guests who were all properly and elegantly costumed. Winston was garbed as a cat, a somewhat fitting choice of costume for a cat burglar.

Lennox Brown's contemporary fantasy, The Small Matter of the Death Cult of Katahdin, The Shabby Realm, Book 1, features the perfectly impractical vampire private sleuth, Winston Lamb, and his formidable ex-wife, Maggie, in a rollicking and humorous adventure. Both of them want the teapot for their clients, which is for some reason, a rare, priceless and powerful item. Brown's story is marvelous; a tale that's bound to please other fans of Douglas Adams as much as it pleased and delighted me. Being a fantasy, much of the action takes place in another realm, and I was enchanted by the author's imaginative and evocative alternate world. Winston Lamb, Maggie, and the ever earnest Timir are unforgettable and unremarkable all at once, and that combination of attributes somehow makes their story work very well indeed. I'm anxiously looking forward to their further adventures. The Small Matter of the Death Cult of Katahdin, The Shabby Realm, Book 1 is highly recommended.
