The Storm That Shook the World by Walter Soellner is not just the story of two men, but also of the people in their lives, whether they are friends or family. Set at the turn of the twentieth century, the novel follows Levi and Markus. These are two very brilliant young men who recently came back from China, and now they are enjoying a few days of respite with their families. This turned out to be the last time they were able to enjoy some time alone with their loved ones because all too soon World War I erupted and took these two men with it.

While Levi and Markus are fighting, clawing, and desperately trying to stay alive in the war in France, their families that they left behind are not in any better shape. Their families are struggling with the hardships of life, and the dangers they face are no less severe than the dangers of the war that Levi and Markus are facing. When the hits are coming from all sides and there is no end in sight in the foreseeable future, what can one do to survive?

Brilliant, witty and intelligently drawn, The Storm That Shook the World is capable of transporting the reader back in time. The story is a delight to read. There is adventure, action, drama and amazing characters that become one with you. I liked Levi and Markus as protagonists because both of them felt real. They were developed properly, given time to breathe and come alive on the pages. The imagery, the descriptions and everything in between was on point and made this novel simply too fantastic to put down.
