Dash is the son of the estate gardener. Lillian is the daughter of the lord of the manor. The two grew up together as best friends. They fell in love, but when Dash asked for Lillian’s hand in marriage, Lillian’s father was furious. Dash wasn’t good enough for his daughter. In fact, he had someone else in mind, someone of more noble standing than Dash. The lord issues a challenge to Dash: to find a fortune and make a man of himself, one suitable to marry Lillian, in the time it takes for a ripe tomato to rot. In other words, in a week’s time. Dash takes the challenge seriously and he’s determined to pursue his quest to find his fortune. His love is that strong. But is Lillian’s father serious about the challenge? Will he hold up his end of the bargain?

D.G. Driver’s romantic novella, The Tomato Quest, presents an unusual, unique challenge to prove the intensity of one’s love. The main characters, Dash and Lillian, are strong characters, intent on fulfilling their promises to each other. This fairy tale type story has all the key ingredients of a good romance, full of adventure and magic, and, of course, tomatoes. Who would have thought that tomatoes could be so romantic? The author weaves a compelling tale, full of marvellous descriptive narratives and strong character development through believable and plot-advancing dialogue. This is a sweet romance that demonstrates the power of the saying, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” A great read.
