Dooley Monahan had one job given to him by his pa, and that was to ride south to a town near the Missouri border and pick up a milk cow. Dooley left with the money his pa gave him for the cow, but he got mixed up with the wrong crowd and decided to hang with this gang instead of going back home. It was decades later when Monahan decides to follow a lead he read in the newspaper about a gold strike, and heads north to find his fortune in gold. But on his journey, he encounters situations he doesn’t want, which slow him down. A family slaughtered by Apaches, the family dog, and a young girl are some of the distractions he found, pushing him west, instead of the northern journey he wanted to be on.

This is my first William W. Johnstone book so I can’t compare it to others, but I did enjoy this story a lot. Dooley made bad choices as a twenty year old causing a life of crime and hardships for him. I enjoyed the cast of characters, and especially the very smart dog Monahan acquired on his journey. I found myself very interested in what this dog was going to do next in the story, as well as wanting to see just where Dooley Monahan would end up next.

If you enjoy a good Western, you will enjoy "The Trail West". It has enough action and twists and turns to give you several hours of enjoyment. I encourage you to pick up a copy to read for yourself.
