The Unexpected Vacation of George Thring by Alistair Puddick is a humorous adventure story, a story of life, if you like. George Thring is depressed. Living alone, he is lonely and he hates his job. He doesn’t need to work but he does because he always has. One day, he leaves work and accidentally runs away. He just keeps driving. He didn’t mean to but he finds himself 200 miles away in an odd town. Booking into the only hotel in town, he meets some strange individuals, but it all begins to make sense the next day. He discovers that he is in town for the annual Elvis Presley festival. Needing a change of clothes, he goes to the only shop in town that sells them, only to find all he can get is an Elvis jumpsuit. Something is happening to George – something inside him is changing. Stumbling along, he falls in love, gets involved in a bank robbery without meaning to and finds himself on the run, not just from the police, but from a gang of bank robbers as well. George has to make some real decisions about his life and must decide whether to go back to the life he has always known or become the hero he has always dreamed he is.

The Unexpected Vacation of George Thring by Alistair Puddick was a funny book, laugh out loud in places. I found myself sympathizing with poor George as he stumbled his way through the situations he found himself in. As the story unfolded, more details about George came to life and it all began to make more sense. Very well written, great characters. Excellent story, very funny, unputdownable!
