Whoa! That’s what I thought when I finished reading the fantastic new book by author Daniel R. Mathews. Aimed at young adults, The Unseen Kingdom is truly a thrill ride of a book, one filled with adventures, fear, heroics and much more, and could truly be enjoyed by any reader, young adult or not. Following the story of our protagonist, thirteen-year-old Tommy Wilson, this book will have you hooked from page one. When Tommy discovers a portal to another world, the mystical world of R’lyeh, his previous biggest worry, that of how to come out to his family and friends, takes a quick back seat. Home of the Titan god Cthulhu, creatures that can inspire nightmares, and strange children that make Tommy and his friends into ‘apostles,’ R’lyeh is not a place that dreams are made of. The longer Tommy is there, the more he realizes that he and his friends must discover its secrets, if they and those they love in the town they left behind have any chance of survival.
I loved this book. Loved it! Author Daniel R. Mathews has done a simply masterful job at writing a coming of age book for members of the LGBT community and their friends that’s not just about coming of age and the LGBT community and its struggles. The Unseen Kingdom is an exciting thrill ride of a read, and will keep its readers turning the pages from start to finish. The best piece of advice I have for readers, besides picking up this book as soon as possible, is to have enough time set aside to read it from start to finish. You simply will not want to put it down. I highly recommend The Unseen Kingdom to any reader who loves great and exciting reads, those who love a bit of horror, and those with a connection to the LGBT community. I will certainly be looking forward to reading my next book by Daniel R. Mathews, and will be keeping my eye out for his next work. This author is definitely one to watch!
