The Visitor from 4-D is a work of fiction for children in the middle grade or preteen age range and was penned by author Deborah Dolan Hunt. The format of the novel is a simple chapter book that is easy to access for the reader’s age range, and the story focuses on mystical and intriguing science fiction themes. We are introduced to the Keating kids, Michael, Keely, and Jake, on a very stormy Saturday afternoon, and soon after this, a tiny visitor appears to them during the lightning strikes. The kids spend time getting to know the little visitor and start to work on helping their new friend to return home.
One of the most impressive things about this entertaining novel, for me at least, was the format, which I think will help children to really engage with reading and enjoy each chapter as its own separate event. The illustrations at the start of every chapter really add context to the tale and make kids want to read what happens next, and the story itself is well structured to hold interest from beginning to end. Author Deborah Dolan Hunt is an excellent writer with a real sense of what is entertaining for kids to read about, and her characters are exceedingly well developed to become really endearing, perhaps especially the visitor and the unusual predicament they’re all in. Overall, The Visitor from 4-D is a really fun science fiction romp sure to encourage even the most reluctant readers to dive into its adventure.
