The Waiting Room by Joan S. Peck is an inspiring story that explores the qualities of enduring friendship. The story unravels in 1983, inside a waiting room in a doctor’s office. Allison, Bella, and Marianne, in striped, oversized wraparound gowns, are nervously waiting for the result of their mammogram examination. When Allison strikes up a conversation, it ends in a couple of drinks at a cocktail lounge. As the three women cultivate their friendship, Allison’s roommate disappears and is later found dead. The incident marks a turning point in their lives as they get involved in the investigation. Through laughter and tears, marriage and motherhood, the bond endures. Many years later, the three meet again in a different waiting room as they continue to face the uncertainties of life together.

Joan S. Peck’s The Waiting Room is a delightful read. It is one of those novels that remind us to celebrate life, laughter, and lasting memories with our friends. The principal characters are realistic and likable. As we follow their life experiences, connecting with them is easy. Simple to understand and follow, the plot is structured flawlessly. The author weaves together the stories of Allison, Bella, and Marianne in a tale of friendship that stands the test of time. Coming from entirely different backgrounds, they manage to forge a bond that will sustain them as they face life’s struggles. This book also deals with some relevant social issues that women face today. I highly recommend this book!
