The Wooden Pony: A Delightful Christmas Tale for Horse and Pony Lovers by Angharad Thompson Rees is the sixth book in the Magical Adventures and Pony Tales. Thomas has always wanted a pony of his very own. One night, Thomas sneaks down to his father’s workshop and makes a very special discovery. Imagine his surprise and delight to discover his father’s latest project is a rocking horse. Nothing can prepare him for the amazing discovery when the pony comes to life and can talk. The pony wants to be free. As his father gets closer to finishing the pony, Thomas knows their time together is coming to an end and soon the pony will have a new owner.

This is a perfect story that the whole family can enjoy together and share in a sweet lesson about life and miracles that will have everyone seeing the magic in Christmas. Magic is a key part of the story through the friendship they form. Angharad Thompson Rees gives the story a peaceful and calm background where anything is possible and sets the stage for a miracle. Colors play a key role in what bonds them, specifically in a heartwarming moment between the two that has Thomas describing colors to the pony such as how green is the color of the trees and plants, which represents the color of freedom.

Readers will enjoy seeing the bond form between the two that sparks adventure and a striving for freedom. Children will be able to relate to Thomas and will have their eyes opened to the belief in magic. The story goes through each step of the pony’s creation, which allows for the two of them to push a little further towards finding out what freedom means for them. As freedom becomes a reality, so does the reality of being separated as each new step also means that soon the horse will have a new owner. The Wooden Pony is a lovely tale of friendship, miracles, magic, and freedom told through the connection between a boy and a rocking horse.
