This Night Sucks by Elizabeth J.M. Walker is a humorous paranormal young adult fiction story. Lana is a Senior in high school and has been a nerd all of her life. Trying to break free from the nerdy stereotype, Lana has made changes in her appearance and her friends. Unfortunately, Alan, the bane of her life, hasn't gotten the message. Just because Lana was coerced into kissing him in the third grade, Alan still believes that she is his soul-mate. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Alan is a geeky Hunter who wears elbow and knee pads at all times and smells like garlic. In a set of unforeseen circumstances and a hot date gone wrong, Alan may be pursuing Lana for a new reason.

This Night Sucks by Elizabeth J.M. Walker is a fantastically written novella about a nerdy high school Senior who is introduced to the nightlife in a whole different manner than she anticipated. This is an enjoyable exaggeration of classic vampire stories; the hunters and their paraphernalia, and the vampires themselves. Lana's and Alan's characters are relatable and quite likable. Lana's viewpoint is amusing and, in some places, laugh-out-loud funny. I enjoyed reading this novella and highly recommend it to those who are fond of young adult vampire stories and love a good laugh. However, I do add a word of caution. It needs to be read with discretion as it has some sexual content and a small amount of foul language, and is not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen.
