This Way Darkness is a trio of macabre stories written by Latashia Figueroa. While the stories can all be categorized as horror, each one stands alone as a complete tale. Wrapped in Small Flesh and Bone is a cautionary story about a couple who resort to visiting a witch in order to have a baby. It's written from the perspective of the husband, whose feelings of powerlessness and dread are apparent to the reader from the very first page. The second tale, The Alternative, follows a young woman whose attempt to drown her sorrow over her mother's death in the arms of a stranger leads her to choose an alternative existence. The Retreat, the last tale, follows a group enthralled by a motivational leader with rather dark designs.

Latashia Figueroa's trilogy of terror is an enjoyable and satisfying set of weird tales. Figueroa is not content to paint a macabre tale - she dissects the thought processes of her characters and shares their feelings and psychological responses with her readers. Her stories are well-written, beautifully plotted and flow quite smoothly. These are not the scariest or bloodiest of tales, and fans of slash and gore tales may be somewhat disappointed; however, connoisseurs of the grotesque should find these stories very much to their liking. While I was reading This Way Darkness, I was favorably reminded of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone and the Weird Tales pulp fiction stories. I'm looking forward to reading more tales of terror and the macabre by Figueroa.
