There’s nothing more special than spending time alone with a grandmother. You can do different things with Grandma, things that perhaps your parents wouldn’t dream of doing or just don’t have the time. Alyssa loves spending time with her Grandma. She loves doing things with Grandma, especially in the kitchen because Grandma loves to bake delicious treats. The only thing is, Grandma sometimes does the strangest things, like wear big cat slippers to go to the grocery store. And this time, apparently, Grandma has taken a special cooking course and has been awarded an honorary degree in the magic of cooking.

Life in Grandma’s kitchen has taken on a whole new dimension as Alyssa, upon arriving for an extended stay, notices colorful test tubes lined up on the kitchen counter and Grandma’s dog is now hot pink with lime green ears and a blue tongue. But the fun is only just beginning. After Alyssa’s dad leaves, Domino, the dog, starts running around the neighborhood and someone calls a dogcatcher. In all the excitement and the threat of Domino being taken away by the dogcatcher, Grandma knocks over one of the test tubes, and a spot in the rug opens up, into which fall the dog, Grandma, Alyssa and, of course, the dogcatcher. And a new adventure begins in a world known as Wishville, where everyone’s every wish comes true. All you have to do is wish.

Jill Ammon Vanderwood has a vivid imagination with no limits, or so it would seem. Obviously she had a wonderful and fascinating grandmother in her life. Her fun-filled young people’s novel, Through the Rug, is full of amusing and entertaining adventures, ones that only an imagination let loose could possibly dream up. This story will certainly appeal to young readers and perhaps inspire them to let their imaginations run wild. And, if only a wish is all that it takes for a wish to come true, perhaps the dreams of these young readers will reach for the sky as well. A great and enjoyable read, a good story to share with Grandma.

What can be more exciting than going to visit Grandma's house? Ten-year-old Alyssa just loves to visit her Grandma's house. Her grandma is not just like everyone else. When her grandmother makes cookies, it's not just an event, it's an experiment. You could say Grandma is like a scientist, you never know just what will result. Domino is her cute, little, white and black dog; however, when Alyssa's father brings her to Grandma's house, Domino is now bright pink and green.

There is a large spot of green goop on the rug which is a gateway to disaster. The dogcatcher is after Domino because of his strange colors. Grandma chases after the dog which falls into the puddle on the rug, followed quickly by Grandma. Alyssa doesn't want to be left alone, so she follows Grandma. Alyssa, Grandma and Domino are now entering the community of Wishville. This community is very strange as your every wish is granted. Wouldn't it be nice to have two extra days every weekend?

Wishville is a wonderful place to visit. You can eat as much as you want. Sleep as much as you want. And you can wish as must as you wish. What will happen when the three of them want to return back to Grandma's house? Will they ever be able to return to Wishville if they fall back through the rug?

"Through the Rug" is a hilarious book which had me laughing from cover to cover. I will never be able to look at a visit to Grandma's house the same way again. It makes me wish that I could visit another community by falling through my rug!

Who wouldn't want a grandma like Alyssa's Grandma Emma? Instead of competing in the Pillsbury Bakeoff, Grandma Emma has obtained an Honorary Degree in the Magic of Cooking from Harvey's College of Imaginary Arts. She thought it was a normal cooking class, but it turned out to be even better. She learned that she was limited only by her imagination.

When I first started reading Through the Rug, I thought it would be a normal book, then I quickly realized that it would turn out to be even better. After turning her dog named Domino from black and white to hot pink and green, Grandma next turns to a recipe for doing something that we have all at one time or another wanted to do, create more days of the week.

An accident during the experiment ends up taking Alyssa, Grandma, and Domino to the magic world of Wishville, where no long faces are tolerated and only happy people are allowed. The inter-generational fun only begins from there.

Your child and you will both enjoy cooking up an afternoon's fun reading Through the Rug. The only drawback is that at a mere 94 pages, the fun ends too soon.

Alyssa's parents are going away for the weekend and she's going to stay with her grandmother. Alyssa is nervous because Grandma is, to say the least, eccentric. Upon arriving at Grandma's house, Alyssa discovers that her grandmother has just earned a degree in magical cooking and she plans to spend the weekend trying out recipes. Alyssa thought this might be fun until she saw what Grandma's magic had done to her dog Domino! Pre-teens will love this book. This book provides bizarre and zany adventures that will tickle the funny bones of 99 percent of the fifth and sixth graders who read it. Hopefully it will keep them interested in reading. Buy this as a birthday present or a Christmas stocking stuffer for a ten-year-old. It is a fun read and one which will be shared with friends.

Looking forward to the sequal or (maybe even a Disney Movie...one day?). My daughter and I enjoyed reading this book together. We did not want to put it down and always wanted to know what was going to happen next... So now we are wondering what is going to happen next? We both enjoyed reading this fun filled adventure of a grandmother, her granddaughter, and her dog. Have to love the dog. The book was humorous and just as it comes to the end,...we did not want it to. Hope there is a second book soon........

It seems to be an ordinary visit to Grandma but quickly turns extremely unusual and exciting. This story pulls you in and keeps you involved. Kids will have a different outlook on visiting Grandma after reading this book. My nieces loved it and they now want to move to Wishville! We're looking forward to the author's next books.

Through the Rug is a delight. It's a light-hearted romp through wonderfully imaginative adventures. Honestly, I think my favorite part about this book is combining the fantasy of magic with a lovable (if a bit eccentric) grandmother. It's an excellent selection for a reader new to reading chapter books independently. The story is straight forward and captures the imagination without prose that is wearing on the reader.

Through the Rug is a great children's book, whether they are old enough to read independently or if they are still being read to. My 6 year old Willow is just started to read, so I read this to her. She loved that the girl's name is Alyssa, just like her best friend. The story held her attention and she loved that Domino was turned colors!

I enjoyed the premise of the story. The absent minded grandmother if you will, being rescued by her granddaughter and dog as they embark on adventures throughout Wishville, the place they were magically transported to through the rug she spilled her magic concoction on. There are morals to be found, but they aren't shoved to the forefront like many children's books tend to do. It was an enjoyable read.

I have not had the opportunity to read any books by this author before, and hadn't heard of this book before. But I loved the book's premise, and I wanted to give it a read myself, so picked up a copy for my home library. My youngest, who is 10-years-old, has decided he wants to read it now. He is an advanced reader and this is actually below his reading level, but he loved the idea of it, too and is eager to give it a go himself. He told me he is going to read it this afternoon when he gets home from school. As for me, I felt that this is a super cute book for kids. The story is great, very imaginative and fun, and it was a great read aloud for my nephew and his friend. It kept the kids' attention as I read it aloud to them.

The book is longer than most picture books I have read so makes for a great chapter book for beginning readers, but still works great as a read aloud. I loved the story line, and felt the author did a great job of capturing their attention and holding it through the end. My nephew and his friend are young, but they were engaged from the start and enjoyed every minute of story time.

The writing was well done. I was not distracted by grammar or mechanics issues so it makes for a good modeling of the English language and written works for kids. I always look for books that are well written so that my kids know what good writing should look like. They don't even realize they are learning about written language and sentence structure when they enjoy a good book, so it is important to me to see books free of errors. I saw that with this book.

Overall, this is a well written, cute story that is sure to bring enjoyment to many a child. Definitely worth reading.

I got this book for my daughter at a great price. She's very much into reading chapter books without pictures, so I'm always on the lookout for books I think she might be interested in. So far I haven't bought a book she didn't enjoy so I know she will love this one.
THROUGH THE RUG by Jill AMMON Vanderwood is a well written book where the grandmother takes a cooking class but somehow she learns magic instead and drops a potion on a rug which turns it into a portal to wishville. Where all your wishes come true. I'll be giving to her for her birthday ;)
5 stars and I definitely recommend it to your kids. If you would like to try this out for yourself you can get it at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/through-the-rug-jill-ammon-vanderwood/1126177519?ean=9781544244211
