Toby's Journey: The Awakening by David March is an inspirational book with many personal and spiritual lessons. It is the story of Toby who grows up with his parents on a beautiful island. He is made to believe, like everyone else on the island, that there is nothing beyond its borders. No one has ever ventured beyond the borders anyway. What would anyone be looking for when the Guardian provides for all the needs of the islanders? But Toby feels the irresistible urge for adventure and wants to know what lies beyond, which is why he sets off on an adventure of a lifetime, a journey that will open his eyes in ways he never imagined. Follow this young and daring character as he learns from teachers with different backgrounds and from life itself.
This novel is thought-provoking, filled with lessons, and most often it reads like a metaphor of life. Like the people in Toby's world, most of us are made to believe that our comfort zone offers enough of the quality of life we want. But this author teaches that there are endless possibilities out there when we muster the courage to go beyond our familiar landscapes. The elements of the setting are beautifully captured in the narrative and it is intriguing that someone would even want to leave a place as beautiful as the island: “It has hundreds of villages, many of which are nestled along the coastline. It’s a beautiful land with a vast panorama of unspoiled views. The trees are an exhibition of magnificence …”
Toby's Journey: The Awakening is a novel about the power of curiosity and about what happens when we choose to step outside our comfort zone. It is filled with spiritual and philosophical insights that will help many readers rethink their lives and the choices they make. David March forces readers to look past the story and to ask serious questions about life and meaning.
