Trip to the Arctic Frontier: The Adventures of Lorenzo the Bear is written and illustrated by Carmela Dutra and tells the story of Lorenzo and his friend, Lucy. They both enjoy playing in the snow and it is this time of year when Lorenzo usually gets a visit from his Grandbears. However, bad weather means they are unable to visit, and Lorenzo is sad. Lucy suggests that they go to the Arctic to see the Grandbears, and so they set off into the wild white snow. There they meet the three Yetis, who Lorenzo had always known as the Creatures of the Snow. The Yetis are upset by the name, explaining that they are the same as Lorenzo and Lucy, they just look a little different. Can they help Lorenzo and Lucy to find the Grandbears after they get lost?

This is a sweet and easy to read story with simple yet colourful illustrations to enhance the storyline. There is a nice and unusual touch at the beginning with a bio of Lorenzo and Lucy and the Yetis, which will help children to understand the characters. There is also a glossary at the end explaining a few words, so there is quite an educational aspect to this story, which has clearly been prompted by the author’s seeking the advice of children for her ideas and characters. The story comes across as well-thought out, has an easy flow, and a happy ending. The author, Carmela Dutra, has produced a lovely little book which can also be a discussion point to explain about equality and respect.
