True Creature by Steve Zell is a supernatural murder mystery with great suspense and interesting characters. Set in Phoenix, Arizona, with the creation of a huge water project designed to bring life to the desert, the community witnesses a series of water-related deaths. Lead investigative reporter Deanne Mulhenney and medical examiner Sara Poole believe the deaths are related and as they begin to investigate, they quickly discover that someone wants them dead. To survive, they have to solve the murders and the faster they do, the better their chances of survival. But who or what is behind these murders?

Filled with mystery and suspense, True Creature is an engrossing read with hints of politics and legends, and characters that are sophisticated and elaborately developed. The writing is beautiful, featuring great storytelling skills and exciting prose. I loved the timely paragraph breaks and the short chapters written to capture the different scenes in the story. Readers who are looking for focused writing, where the elements of style and conflict are well balanced, will delight in this novel. Steve Zell knows what it takes to keep a reader’s attention, ensuring that the characters are realistic. The plot is strong and readers will soon begin to root for the characters. The story feels so real and the setting is skillfully developed with images and places described to give readers vivid visuals of where the story takes place. True Creature is highly imaginative and hugely entertaining, one of those novels you finish without being aware of how much time you’ve spent reading it.
