Twist is a contemporary thriller written by Roni Teson. Beatrice Malcomb has been living with her aunt and uncle in Southern California ever since her mother died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, an incurable neurological condition, and her father was put on the FBI's most wanted list. She misses her home and life in Seattle, especially her best friend Amilee. Bea meets Lucas Drake when he accompanies his father, a plumber and friend of her aunt and uncle, on a repair job at their home. She's never been very interested in the boys who seem to flock around her, but Lucas is different. Somehow, Bea is intrigued by the blond, funny surfer boy who just happens to go to the same school as she does. Their instant attraction leads to an intense and wonder-filled afternoon at the beach, a blissful moment which becomes a prelude to a nightmarish series of events.

Roni Teson's novel of intrigue, Twist, is powerful and compelling. It starts out as a 'love at first sight' story, but it is so much more than that. Twist is narrated alternately by Bea and Lucas as they try to navigate the forces arrayed against them. Bea has a series of unsettling interactions with her fugitive father and the FBI, and Lucas is savagely beaten and left with traumatic brain injuries and amnesia. Teson is a masterful storyteller who weaves high technology, intrigue, and advanced medical research into this modern-day tale of star-crossed lovers. I got so involved in their stories that I couldn't put the book down. Twist is a marvelous story and is highly recommended.

Beatrice Malcolm’s life is complicated, with her mom dead from a rare disease and her dad on the Most Wanted list of the FBI. She doesn't need more complications, but then she meets Luke Drake and falls in love with him. More problems arise when Luke is beaten up to within an inch of his life and she is kidnapped by her dad, whom she hasn't seen in years. It seems that her dad being on the Most Wanted list has more to do with Bea than she realized. Why is her dad a wanted man, what did he do and what is Luke’s connection to all of the bizarre things happenings? Will Bea figure everything out before it’s too late in Twist by Roni Teson.

Roni Teson has created a complicated plot in Twist. It seemed like a young adult love story at first but it gets more complex with every chapter. The details of the story were intriguing and the surprises just kept coming. The novel was written well; I actually didn't know what was real and what was not. Bea and Luke were not simple characters, they have mood swings, they’re sometimes rude but they were strong and resilient characters. I like them. It’s really amazing what one would do for the people you love, as was shown in the book. They would risk a lot to keep the people they love. The last part made me teary and crave more of the story. The last chapter was really good, but the epilogue was the best part.

Roni Teson has written a very enigmatic book in Twist, her second novel; it is part young adult fiction, part romance, and part mystery. Petite, brunette, sixteen-year-old Beatrice ‘Bea’ Malcolm has a hypnotic effect on everyone she meets, particularly males, and her first sexual encounter - with local hotshot, Lucas Drake - is the conduit that sets in motion a chain of events that will change both of their lives irrevocably. Bea finds herself thrown into the middle of a complex web of love, lust, kidnapping, violence, and government agency manhunts – but what is the link to her absent father and recently deceased mother? Why does the FBI want to question Bea and what is it about her that seems to lead everyone to ‘twist’ to her every whim?

I enjoyed reading Twist, and I’m still not sure I’ve taken it all in! Roni Teson has written a very absorbing story and created two very compelling, if not exactly likeable, characters in its twin narrators, Bea and Lucas. I always enjoy a tale with multiple narrators and this was very effectively accomplished in this case. I was intrigued by the multi-layered story from its first page and Teson has a very easy, clear and readable style which draws you in and keeps you hooked throughout. It is very different to anything I’ve read before and has both an original premise and, aptly, many dizzying plots twists. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys mysteries and something a little bit different!
