Twist of Fate is a romance novella written by Ingrid McCarthy. After five months of pregnancy, Mila Dillard miscarries at the news of her husband Ryan’s death. Her mind takes her back to happier moments of when they had first met. Mila Peterson had always enjoyed her piano lessons, as it allowed her to escape the loneliness of her own home. On her thirteenth birthday, Mila meets fourteen-year-old Ryan at the home of her piano teacher, Miss Matheson. Although both shy, a young romance blossoms between Mila and Ryan, leading to Ryan being sent off to boarding school for five years. On his graduation, Ryan and Mila marry. Not long after, Ryan is diagnosed with a brain tumor. A hospital visit reunites Ryan’s mother and Mila, both of whom detest each other. On his release from the hospital, Ryan signs up to become a volunteer fire fighter. When news of a freak accident reaches Mila, the shock, causing pain to spear through her abdomen, ends the pregnancy. Fourteen years later, a chain of events too shocking to imagine unfurls, engulfing Mila in a horrific emotional spiral from which she may never return.

Ingrid McCarthy’s incredible tale of love, strength, trust, betrayal and tragedy is one of the most powerful I have read to date. So realistic in its wording, Twist of Fate introduces some of the most evil and vindictive characters imaginable without presenting a horror story, but rather one of shock and heartbreak. Many tears fell as I read Mila and Ryan’s story, which shows that no matter how strong and innocent a love is, unexpected curve balls born of lies and deceit can destroy that innocence. I am so grateful to have such wonderful parents – something I always took for granted until I read this book. With one child having their life micro-managed and the other being completely ignored, it was no surprise that Mila and Ryan found solace in each other’s company. Although painful and tragic, Twist of Fate had me hooked on every single word from the first page to the last. I recommend Ingrid McCarthy’s story to connoisseurs of fine romance, which carries a style unafraid to pack a punch in realism, drama and tragedy.
