Two Rings for Christmas is a young adult historical romance written by Beppie Harrison. Jenny was twenty years old, and she still wondered when the love of her life, Fergus Carney, would return from America and make her his bride. It had been three years since he left, and the three letters he sent during his long absence did little to assuage her loneliness and fears for the future. She had received his last letter six months ago, so she could understand her mother's impatience and concern. After all, she was twenty already and wanted to have her own home and family. Christmas was not far off when her mother spoke to her as the two were preparing the family’s traditional Christmas cake. Daniel Beatty was a weaver who had his own house in town, and he seemed a kindhearted and gentle man. He was interested, her mam told her, in making Jenny his wife. Mam knew Jenny's heart still belonged to Fergus, but she worried about her daughter's future just the same.

Beppie Harrison's young adult historical romance, Two Rings for Christmas, is a beautifully written and well researched novel that brings to life the everyday lives and hardships of Irish farmers in the early 18th century. Harrison weaves a spell as she presents the parallel images of Fergus braving stormy seas as he returns home for his love, and Jenny pondering her choices between a marriage to a kind man she doesn't love and a future as an unloved spinster if Fergus fails to return. I was particularly moved by the harshness of the Irish winter when one lived in a stone house with cracks around the doors and windows, and the image of a family huddled in their beds to survive the coldest months of the winter is not one I'll soon forget. Harrison's characters are deftly portrayed, and her story is compelling, thoughtful and sweet. Two Rings for Christmas is highly recommended.
