Wynter's life takes an extreme turn in Ultraxenopia, which is book one in the Project W.A.R. series by M.A. Phipps. At the age of 21, all people have to take a test whose outcome will determine what the person's role in society will be. Wynter, however, has a rather different experience during the exam and consequently turns into the test subject of a doctor with questionable methods and even more questionable motives. For Wynter, the time as a test subject is the beginning of a path that can apparently only end in the destruction of all humanity. She has a special power, but it is classified as a disease. In addition to making her feel like she is a lonely outcast, it also gnaws away at her life energy.

Ultraxenopia by M.A. Phipps is one of many books with a similar idea, i.e. young adults who for some reason turn out to be different than the majority and who live in a world that is less than ideal when it comes to their leaders and the overall ethics of the population in general. What makes this book different from the rest is the writing and the way the story develops. It was a little short, but I guess this is usually the case with books in a series - and once all the books are out, you could always just read them in one go to create a single, flawless reading experience.

I liked that Wynter acted like a normal person would, i.e. not going through all her issues as if it was easy for her. Sometimes, heroes in novels seem a little bit unreal and you feel like they are fake. Wynter certainly does not feel fake and acts in a believable manner. I did not feel really connected to most of the other characters, but in some way that is a good thing. It will definitely be interesting to see whether Wynter will somehow manage to stay safe, considering the rather silly decision she made at the end of book 1!
